Eeny, meeny, miny moe: catch good talent by the toe

As the Office and Recruitment Manager at T2 Tech Group, I am in charge of our hiring and onboarding process. With the help of James Rockenbach, our newly appointed Chief Strategy Officer, we have acquired new clients, exciting projects and therefore, we need to hire new talent.

To put things into perspective, a single job posting can bring in up to 300 resumes over a 2-week period. To help with the interviewing process, we have added some upfront questions to help vet a number of applicants who don’t meet some of the basic criteria. However, I wanted to share some tips with potential candidates on how to better position themselves for an interview as they pursue their next career opportunity with T2 Tech Group.

1. Put your best foot forward

Your resume is the first impression of you. Spelling errors, bad formatting and irrelevant experience is a total turn off.

Write a cover letter – if you are interested in our company, we are interested in you! Put something quirky about yourself on your resume – it shows you have personality and that you stand out from the rest.

Articulate your talents and skills. These include transferable, knowledge-based and “soft” skills. We like to hear of individuals who can demonstrate cases where they have over delivered on a project or have been proactive to solve a foreseeable obstacle.

2. Pay attention to detail

Paying attention to detail translates into your work ethic as well. It shows me that you will take the time to make sure your work is of high quality for our clients.

Have someone review your resume. A major red flag is spelling errors. Ask a friend to read over your resume as another set of checks and balances before sending off your resume to potential employers.

Sometimes the little things go a long way. For example, write a thank you note after our interview. Follow up if you haven’t heard from me in a couple of days. I am busy reviewing resumes and interviewing and I may not have had the opportunity to circle back. This shows me you are interested in our company.

3. Have basic knowledge about T2 Tech Group

You’d be surprised how many people interview with almost zero knowledge about what we do. With that said, we also don’t expect you to know every single detail (if you did, you would be running the company!). Working knowledge of what we do, who we do it for, and the services we provide, is key.

If you don’t know, ask clarifying questions to deepen your knowledge. Take it a step further by summarizing that thought and repeat in your own words to ensure you truly understand.

4. Be genuine

Be real with me and the others you interview with. We want to get to know you, your personality and experience so we can make sure this is a good fit for both parties. Be sure you can tell us why you really want the position. It’s more than just another job, it’s the next step in your career!

Because we are in the consulting business, it is the utmost importance that we hire honest, reliable and trustworthy people. Keep in mind that you will most likely be working on-site at a client or interfacing with clients on a daily basis. You will be the face of T2 Tech Group and representing our core values.

5. Dress for success

When you come onsite for an interview – dress up. It shows respect and professionalism. Again, since our employees are the face of our company, we want them to not only act the part but dress for the part as well. But don’t worry, we fully embrace our “casual Fridays”!

In the end, we are professionals who like to have a laugh here and there. Our culture is just as important as the work you do. We are a small but mighty firm. We compete with the best and we provide world-class solutions for our clients. We have several opportunities to further your career whether you’re an engineer, project manager or a high-level executive. And if you don’t see your dream position listed on our career page, let me know! We are ALWAYS looking for good people and GREAT talent.
